A pipeline whose primary service is carrying a mixture of crushed solids in a water or oil medium. The common use of the term refers to a pipeline carrying pulverized coal in water. A pipeline is the cheapest and most efficient form of transportation for liquids. In recent years the pumping of small-particle solids, notably coil in water, has gained favor with shippers who are attracted by the pipeline's economics and safety, as well as environmental acceptance.
