Any of various elastic materials or substances resembling rubber. The petrochemical industry has produced many types of elastomers that are used for gasket material, guides, swab cups, valve seats, machinery vibration-absorber mounts, etc. Elastomers are highly resistant to chemical decomposition (hydrolysis) in the presence of hydrocarbons which make them desirable for use in the petroleum industry, much more so than natural rubber.
